The Aide Memoire was compiled by the British Royal of Engineers as handbook of hard to find information. Designed for military engineering officers thousands of miles from home who often did not have a ready reference library to many obscure but important pieces of information which they may have need of in some forgotten colonial outpost or while on campaign.
